Odd to think about the present DLR platform - it stood unused for 50 years, got brought into use 20 years ago, and now is to be abandoned. |

In article om, Harry
G writes First of the new platforms will open Monday 18 June, with the other to follow in the Autumn. I went past it this morning. It would appear that they've installed points in the line so that trains can be routed into the southern platform. Once that's in use, the track into the existing platform will be slewed to meet that in the northern of the new platforms. Probably says more about the usefullness (lack of) of a short bay platform facing towards London in Stratford. How many trains terminate there from that direction, DLR asside? Robin The Great Eastern Railway (later LNER) ran passenger services from Fenchurch St. to Stratford via Bow Road for many years. The two bay platforms were intended for this but never used since these trains were axed in the late 1940s, and Bow Road station closed, before the Stratford reconstruction was completed. The line via Bow Road is still there but used only for diversions/engineering etc. The DLR bay will not be completely disused - the track area will be filled in and occupied by the ramps to a new footbridge crossing the Westbound Central Line to the new DLR platforms. Obviously this cannot be put in place until the existing DLR platform closes. |

Was track ever installed in platform 7? I don't remember ever seeing any, but the platforms were never re-nmbered to eliminate the unused ones, indeed, in more recent times platform 10a was created to avoid re-numbering existing ones. The only old platform at Stratford that had its number 'reclaimed', and used elsewhere. Stratford is the only station with more than two platforms I can think of where the lowest (1) and highest (15) numbered platforms are next to each other. Also, it must surely be the only station where four consecutivly numbered platforms, 2-5, have four different elextrification systems, at least for a few more days. Of course, it also had two other systems in the past. How are the new DLR platforms going to be numbered? |

How about Edinburgh Waverley, where 1 and 20 are together? I would suggest 4A and 4B if I was a betting man, as the whole station needs renumbering, but it would probably make sense to wait until all the alterations to provide new NLL platforms and the new westbound Central line platform are completed. On second thoughts, don't place any bets, the platforms are already shown as 4A and 4B on TfL's drawings of the Stratford upgrades... Paul |

![]() So the new station opened today (only first platform obviously). I must say I'm quite impressed, mostly by the size of the thing - it is much wider then it looked like from aside :-) Now I have to pass two stairs to get to the westbound Central line though :-| |
