Hi all, there has been talk for some years that a station would be
built near to Eastfields Level Crossing (between Streatham North Junction and Mitcham Junction for those not in the know) but I wasn't aware anything was approved. However, driving past the other day I notice a lot of clearance work going on, and have to wonder if this means something is actually happening about it. Does anyone know more? |

As a rail enthusiast who grew up in North Mitcham, I'm pretty sure that this is not the case, and there has never been a passenger station in the area. BTN |

In short, it sounds like the station is underway, and, optimistically, hoped to open by December. Interesting stuff - not seen this mentioned before anywhere. The LB Merton press release seems to state that the usual hurdle with any such plans - money - is not a problem in this case, as "Network Rail has received internal approval to fund the construction of the station". Can't help but feel that a December '07 opening date is wildly optimistic, especially given how long it's taken to build Shepherd's Bush station on the WLL. Of course each situation is unique, and frankly I've no idea what the issues are when it comes to building a new station. |

Of course each situation is unique, and frankly I've no idea what the issues are when it comes to building a new station.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - I agree, December 08 might be more likely! The following is on the Meton.gov site: "Residents' questions answered on new Eastfields station 17 July 2007 "More than 200 local residents attended a public meeting to discuss the proposed new mainline station at Eastfields, Mitcham, on Saturday 14 July. Network Rail and Merton Council, who jointly organised the meeting, both had representatives in attendance to answer questions about plans for the station and parking issues. Network Rail has now submitted their proposal to the council, which is being considered by planning officers. Residents will be formally contacted as part of the consultation process for the station. The meeting was told that Network Rail has received internal approval to fund the construction of the station. Residents asked if funds were available for wider improvements. The council plans to approach Transport for London to seek funding for improvements to the linkages between the town centre and the station. The overall economic impact of the station should be very positive for businesses, residents and public services, such as schools. Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, Councillor Diane Neil Mills, said: "I was delighted to see so many people showing an interest in this exciting new development for Mitcham. Subject to Network Rail securing planning approval for the development, we are hopeful that the new train station should open in December 2007, having been under consideration since the 1930s. It will offer the local community quick and regular access to London Victoria.' "These plans are indicative of the council's commitment to the regeneration of Mitcham town centre. I am delighted with the progress that has been achieved over the past 12 months and am grateful to both council officers and Network Rail for all their work on the project.' A total of 60 names for the station have been submitted. Network Rail will take the final decision in consultation with local politicians in the autumn. Network Rail is continuing discussions with train operators regarding the details of the service that will be offered. " Looks a bit like Xrail to me! MaxB |

The station is part of a new concept station for Network Rail and they decided to use Eastfields to test it out. The funding is all in place. Building work is proceeding quickly and by all accounts the station should be up and running by December, if the deadline is missed it will be open by May 2008. At the moment only trains bound for or from Victoria are scheduled to stop at the station though talk does exist that First Capital Connect will stop at Eastfields though apparently problems exist with them stopping at the moment due to the timetable. When the timetable is revamped in December 2009 that may change. Very good news and it will be a big boost for the local area. Martin Whelton www.whelton.blogspot.com |

I've read about this somewhere, isn't the idea that a somewhat basic station is prefabricated off site and delivered on a few lorries? Possibly they've looked back at some of the 'el cheapo' stations in the region - Berrylands on the SWML looks as though it was knocked up pretty quickly... Paul |

Paul The interesting thing is that the line is on a slight curve at this point, and i thought stations built on curves were now a big no no?!! Berrylands went up in the 1930s and i dont think took too long! The best example of a pre-made station was Leeds Whitehall, built for the purpose of trains that could not stop at Leeds during the big reworking. Don't know where it is now, but it certainly isnt there anymore! |
