Where were the entrances to the old tunnels at Drayton park that used
to go to Finsbury? Are they completely buried or is there anything still visible? Since the victoria line partially uses these does it pass under drayton park and come back up or does it go around? B2003 |

The original tunnel portals were destroyed when the GN electrification link was put in. However, the severed end of one of the tunnels, with iron lining segments, used to be clearly visible from trains between Finsbury Park and Drayton Park. The tunnel portals at Drayton are no more - they used to be between the tracks, more or less where the trailing crossover is. I believe there is a gate adjacent to the down road, next to the northern tip of the crossover, which gives access to the old northbound tunnel. The southbound Victoria Line passes directly beneath Drayton Park's island platform, whilst the northbound road is slightly to the west, and passes beneath the derelict area where the old GN&CR depot used to be. Does anybody have any idea of the depth of the Victoria Line at this point. Would a Drayton Park Victoria Line station capable of serving the Emirates Stadium be a better prospect than the £60 million pound project suggested for Holloway Road? |

However: 1) building a new station would still cost a hell of a lot more than £60m 2) the Victoria line is already operating at capacity, so a new station wouldn't be a great idea. [IMO, walking to FP, Arsenal or Highbury & Islington will do the fans good] I didn't realise the Vic line went right under Drayton Park, that's v interesting - next time I'm there I'll listen out for it! Regarding your square-bracketed sentiments, I quite agree - when it comes to access to the Victoria line from the new stadium, the existing stations at High & I and FP are perfectly adequate. There are plans for improvements at H&I station and the streetscape around Highbury Corner (see [1]). Whilst the layout at H&I isn't ideal in that it deposits punters at the southernmost end of the Vic line platforms, in practice it works fine on matchdays. I am blissfully unaware of the matchday situation above ground at Finsbury Park for fans heading north on FCC, though I'm led to believe it's not ideal. I'll endeavour to head up there after a match in the near future. ----- [1] TfL page on proposed Highbury and Islington improvements http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/proj...nges/5324.aspx |

It's awful, both coming into London prior to matches and getting away after, and that's for me travelling to/from work, not even going to the matches! The trains are only 4 car and have no room to join when they stop at Potters Bar going south from about midday on match saturdays, the same going north in the reverse direction. It's almost impossible to get off if you're too far towards the end of the train ![]() so those from "outer" stations use the fasts instead. I've brought this up with FCC a couple of times - usual response "we put extra trains on" and "we cannot predict customer flow as many customers have flexible tickets". They must be aware of the reality of it though. It sucks - I drive to work at weekends now or when going in socially on match days which is a waste - I have an annual ticket paid for already. Cheers, Dave |
