I note that these are exact change only, and as such are yet another
downgrade for those not familiar with the system or short of change. Why is TfL getting so obsessive about making things difficult, just like they did with the bus machines? Neil -- Neil Williams Put my first name before the at to reply. |

They also allow Oyster cards to be topped up, doubling, at least, the amount of machines that do. To allow for the machinery to accept credit / debit cards and deal with Oyster there is insufficent space to allow them to give change too. |

That "obselete metal based payment" is a shed load quicker that using a credit card and when theres a large queue of people that matters. A LOT! Personally I find it intensely irritating when I'm in a queue in the supermarket or wherever, when some dick has to pay for a few quids worth of goods by card because they're too lazy to carry cash and so they delay everyone else. Surely not giving change means that the machine will be fed a lot more coins and it will have no choice but to hold onto them. This will cause it to fill up more quickly, or require it to have more space devoted to coin holding. |

Let's have a ticket machine race at a NR or LUL station of your choice. I'll pay card, you can pay cash (notes, requiring change, obviously). We'll see what the difference is... Personally I find it intensely irritating when I'm in a queue in the supermarket or wherever, when some dick has to pay for a few quids worth of goods by card because they're too lazy to carry cash and so they delay everyone else. If everyone had the exact right change ready for their goods when they reached the front of a queue, you might have a point. In the real world, the process of using a card in a supermarket is just as quick as paying cash, given people's annoying habit of requiring change and/or not counting out the right money in advance... -- John Band john at johnband dot org www.johnband.org |

I wouldn't use notes unless I had no choice, besides which you said "metal". Last time I looked notes weren't. Even so , they'd still be quicker than a card for small amounts. Obviously if you were buying a 100 quid long distance ticket thats different. In the real world, the process of using a card in a supermarket is just as quick as paying cash, given people's annoying habit of requiring change and/or not counting out the right money in advance... There is that , on the other hand the number of people who can't find their cards or can't remember the PIN when they do is quite mind boggling. B2003 |

The chutes to hold coins for change and the mechanism for floating machines take up quite a bit of room. The coin vault is located in the lower half of the machine. |
