Colin Rosenstiel writes What would be the nearest Piccadilly Line station to Heathrow at which I might reasonably park? I'd go for Hounslow West, since it is free on bank holidays. Years ago I used to use Hatton Cross where, at one time, you could park free on any day, but it is small and has become a bit too well known in recent years. -- Paul Terry |

I paid £25.50 single to go from Cambridge to Heathrow last month, so I assumed you had make a mistake and went on-line to check. And, blow me, you're right - they've increased the price by 25%! Given that it is free, Hounslow West would appear to be a good choice. Remember your Oyster card - £1 fare for PAYG, £3 for a paper ticket. Though if you do need to buy a return with a paper ticket you'd actually be sold an off-peak zones 2-6 Day Travelcard at £4.80. |

To be fair, the drivers and other staff will all have to be paid overtime. I guess it's also possible that they're laying on extra services to cope with demand, but I haven't compared the timetables. |

It would have been cheaper by train (if off-peak, £23 for an Off-Peak Day Travelcard). -- Colin Rosenstiel Very interesting, plus it's faster. Though with National Express a Cambridge - Heathrow return costs £33, whilst an open return costs £35 (you need to ring them beforehand to confirm your return journey so they allocate a seat for you). Of course you get one seat all the way there with NX, without the need to haul your luggage down into the Tube. Still, I'd go for the rail route myself, unless I was carrying a bag full of gold bars... though thinking about it I believe the convention is actually to take the gold bars away from Heathrow... |
