Default Heathrow on Boxing Day?

As Paul Terry has already pointed out there are plenty of National
Express coaches from Cambridge to Heathrow on Boxing Day, the
journey time being between 2hr25 and 2hr40 - the 'standard single'
fare is 32.

[snip]

So, I dispute your notion that there is no public transport on boxing
day! Apart from the direct coach, you could drive her down into London
and drop her off at a Tube station for onward travel via the
Piccadilly line to Heathrow (max fare 4 with a paper ticket, less
with Oyster PAYG). The easiest Tube station to get to from the M11 is
Redbridge (Central line), just off the North Circular. However I think
there'd be a more frequent service from Leytonstone - get off the
North Circular at Redbridge roundabout then take the A12 west, exit at
the Green Man roundabout then a very short distance to Leytonstone
Tube station (change at Holborn for the Piccadilly line, journey time
to Heathrow 1hr20-ish).

Ah! I hadn't realised that TfL had broken away from the national no
trains rule on Boxing Day.

What would be the nearest Piccadilly Line station to Heathrow at which I
might reasonably park?

I don't know what the deal is with regards to on street parking near
the western Piccadilly line stations, I guess there would be
Controlled Parking Zones around many. Of course the times CPZ's are in
force vary, and some are in force on bank holidays.

However there are big car parks at some of the stations - see the LU
car parks page here, which gives the number of spaces as well as the
charges:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/tubestationcarparks/default.aspx

Hatton Cross has 106 spaces, though it might have several people with
the same idea as well!

Hounslow West, the next station along, has 425 places so might well be
a better bet.

One other more adventurous idea would be to attempt to park on street
somewhere in Harlington, then get the 140 bus into Heathrow (every 6-9
minutes, journey time is given as 14 minutes). Harlington can be
accessed via Junction 4 of the M4, then from Cherry Lane roundabout
take Shepiston Lane east.
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=508944&y=178467&z=2

I've no idea what parking restrictions are around Harlington, but my
gut feeling is that whilst there may well be CPZs, they won't cover
all the sidestreets in the area - I could of course be very wrong!

I'd go for Hounslow West, since it is free on bank holidays. Years ago I
used to use Hatton Cross where, at one time, you could park free on any
day, but it is small and has become a bit too well known in recent
years.

I paid £25.50 single to go from Cambridge to Heathrow last month, so I
assumed you had make a mistake and went on-line to check. And, blow
me, you're right - they've increased the price by 25%!

D'oh - I posted the link to the LU car park page, I even looked at the
number of spaces, but I didn't check the charges! Given that it is
free, Hounslow West would appear to be a good choice.

Remember your Oyster card - £1 fare for PAYG, £3 for a paper ticket.
Though if you do need to buy a return with a paper ticket you'd
actually be sold an off-peak zones 2-6 Day Travelcard at £4.80.

P.S. The £32 fare is for Boxing Day only. It returns to £25.50 the
next day (phew).

Ha ha! Yes, it's a Christmas present from National Express. To be
fair, the drivers and other staff will all have to be paid overtime. I
guess it's also possible that they're laying on extra services to cope
with demand, but I haven't compared the timetables.

Blimey! It would have been cheaper by train (if off-peak, £23 for an
Off-Peak Day Travelcard).

Very interesting, plus it's faster.

Though with National Express a Cambridge - Heathrow return costs £33,
whilst an open return costs £35 (you need to ring them beforehand to
confirm your return journey so they allocate a seat for you).

Of course you get one seat all the way there with NX, without the need
to haul your luggage down into the Tube. Still, I'd go for the rail
route myself, unless I was carrying a bag full of gold bars... though
thinking about it I believe the convention is actually to take the
gold bars away from Heathrow...
