I don't know why the initial train was cancelled, they were saying the
delays were 'waiting for train crew' or some such.

we transferred to swindon and the train we got there was delayed 'due
to a freight train seperating', or words to that effect.

no mention of weather.

I recall something about a freight grinding to a halt in the Severn
Tunnel and causing general mayhem. So FGW should be happy to refund
passengers and claim it back from NR or the freight company - in
principle.
