I cam through paddington late last night and they were installing new
ticket barriers for the far platforms (the high numbers, I forget which platforms they are). Just incase anyone is interested ![]() -- Mark. www.MarkVarleyPhoto.co.uk www.TwistedPhotography.co.uk www.TwistedArts.co.uk www.BeautifulBondage.net |

Just incase anyone is interested ![]() Its for the upcoming Oyster rollout That's certainly not the primary purpose of the new ticket gates, which is to tackle ticket-less travel - limited future acceptance of Oyster PAYG on FGW trains out of Paddington is more of a by-product of this. Take a look at this map of Oyster PAYG routes on National Rail (PDF)... http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloa...G-08-01-02.pdf ....and you'll see that the main beneficiaries will be those travelling between Ealing Broadway and Paddington. FGW did start to accept Oyster PAYG for journeys between Greenford and Ealing Broadway at the beginning of this year, but not at intermediate stations. I'm not up to date but I *think* the plan is for those stations south of Greenford to be kitted up with standalone Oyster readers, which would mean Oyster PAYG could then be accepted for any journeys between all the stations served by the Greenford - Paddington service. |

I wonder if there are any plans to accept Oyster PAYG on Heathrow Connect between Hayes and Heathrow, or on Heathrow Express. I would imagine similar treatment to Watford Junction where Travelcards are concerned. I could envisage the Express premium being collected either through separate platform validators, or on-train validators. |

The line from Airport Junction to Heathrow is privately owned (by BAA) and not part of the national rail network. FGW are currently looking at going live with these gates (and those on the overbridge, once installed) in late April. Extra Revenue staff will be in place by Easter, so the time spent twixt then & going live will hopefully see them out roving around on gateline blocks on their network, checking tickets. There are major concerns over the overbridge gates coping with the expected demand on them from customers. We'll see what happens. The icing on the cake, so to speak, is that, once CrossRail gets Royal Assent, the gateline (E for those in the know) will need relocating for enabling works to be undertaken! This within a month or so of their installation! Why they don't now just wait until they know where they've got to be resited, I don't know. A complete waste of money. |
