Not with. I thought both sets of platforms were above each other for lack of lateral space, something that is in shorter supply at Gloucester Road if anything. There's a formerly four platform District Line station above it, so I can't see why there would be. South Kensington only has them on separate levels to provide cross platform interchange with the Deep Level District. A search of Flickr reveals this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/black_c...44343/sizes/m/ And Direct Enquiries says the interchange is level: http://www.directenquiries.com/stati...44_L2R&level=3 U -- http://londonconnections.blogspot.com/ A blog about transport projects in London |

And, I suspect, to make it easier to follow the pattern of narrow streets between there and Brompton Road, which requires two tight 20-mph S-bends. -- Richard J. Hotels are nearby. According to an old accessibility spreadsheet that used to be online but I think is no longer the Russell Square has about 20 steps up from the platform to the lifts, which then take you up to street level. At Gloucester Road, the District and Circle Lines have 36 to 40* steps up from the platform to street level. The deeper Piccadilly Line has 27 steps up from the platform to the lifts, which then take you up to street level. * [The spreadsheet says 36 from the Circle and eastbound District, but 40 from the westbound District, which seems unlikely, but the numbers are about right.] The numbers to/from the District *are* right! I counted them today when I changed there. The stairs to the westbound District appear to be older, with a shorter rise on each step. -- Richard J. (to email me, swap 'uk' and 'yon' in address) |

Hotels are nearby. If you can use Earl's Court station instead of Gloucester Road, you can get lifts from all platforms to street level. But I guess a 15kg suitcase isn't too hard to haul up a flight of stairs. Thanks for the responses. Everything worked out fine. Staff were helpful in opening gates, even swiping my Oyster for me, or else me turning the case around got it through the normal turnstiles. Fortunately I didn't travel with bags at weekends, when Russell Square was closed on weekends for refurbishment. The walk from Holborn is quite pleasant and can include the Cittie of Yorke on the way! Cheers, George W Russell Bangalore |
