Of course, LU would have to educate customers to pass their Oyster card over the scanner whether or not they needed to in order to open the gate. Which they do. "On the Tube you must touch your card on the card reader when you enter the gates and also when you exit, even if the gates are open." Seems fairly clear to me. Surely this will cause problems at times when the gates are open because a large number of people need to be moved out of the station at a high rate. I'm thinking particularly here of places like Hyde Park Corner during events in the Park. Surely everybody stopping to have their Oysters scanned is going to reduce throughput somewhat. -- Spyke Address is valid, but messages are treated as junk. I'm thinking particularly here of places like Hyde Park Corner during events in the Park. The station tends to get busy at the end of the event with people trying to get home. Often they leave the gates shut to regulate the number of people getting to the platfrom. People exiting the station isn't usually a problem as people often arrive over a longer period of time. (All in my experience) Surely everybody stopping to have their Oysters scanned is going to reduce throughput somewhat. Sounds like it will but what is the alternative? Don't introduce PAYG? David |

Scanner reliability is yet to be seen but it's likely that the stand alone units will be very reliable since they don't have any moving parts or openings to get jammed. If the gates are open you need to remember to scan your card at a validator. That requires learning a new habit which wont take long for most people. It'll take more than a new habit to solve the problem at Stratford. At Stratford, it currently records an "incomplete journey" if you change from the Central line to the Jubilee line (a change which requires you to go through a set of ticket gates). Last time I was there I looked around for scanners to do something about this, but I couldn't see any. -- message by Robin May, consumer of liquids Hello. Is one of them not gated to the outside world? Have you filled in the form at http://www.oystercard.com/contactform_ask_email.php to ask what the official word is? David |

As far as I'm aware, there are 'validators' between Platforms 3 (Central Line Westbound) and 5 (Up Electric), not sure about Platforms 6 (Central Line Eastbound) and 8 (Down Electric) however. Most of them are off or closed but I assume that will be fixed before PAYG goes live. I can confirm that the validators are live at West Ham (bottom of the stairs to the c2c Platforms and on the Ovebridge between the Silverlink and Jubilee Line platforms). Is one of them not gated to the outside world? I've got no idea. The Jubilee line platforms are gated off from the rest of the station, even though to get to the Jubilee line gates you have to go through a set of gates at the entrance to the station anyway. Have you filled in the form at http://www.oystercard.com/contactform_ask_email.php to ask what the official word is? No, I have a monthly and will continue to buy them for the foreseeable future, so it doesn't affect me too much. -- message by Robin May, consumer of liquids Hello.
