If the gates are open at the destination, all you have to do is
present your Oyster Card to the RTD (target) on the gate as normal.

Tube staff are under instructions _not_ to power gates down.

Well, they were open and off (no lights on oyster reader - I tried
swiping and no reaction) at Walthamstow Central last night.

in 2.5 months, ive seen 1 x gate with red scanners, but closed gates (ie
paper tickets were still working), 1 x gate with scanner not working (no
lights), and the same figures on the buses. no problems with my TC though,
of course.
