It was not as good as the then brand new Victoria Line. But it was certainly a cut above the Northern and Central lines. But, in those days for shere neglect and decay it was hard to beat the East London Line. Back then it was the East London Branch of the Metropolitan Line. |

Many LU stations are very smart these days -- much of the bloated PPP funding has gone into refurbishing them. My local (above ground) station even has colourful flower baskets, as well as all-new platform surfaces, zero graffiti, clean walls, etc. It is cleaned regularly during the day, and is basically spotless. It doesn't have any more facilities than it ever had, but it's never looked better. It's a far cry from the neglected, run-down system we used to have. Not today, of course, but the clean, tidy trains usually show up, pretty much on time, and an ordinary passenger would probably be surprised to know that they're almost 35 years old. When the East London line re-opens, it's probably also going to have as-new underground and brand-new above-ground stations, but they weren't nearly as bad as in the past when it closed. |
